Carlos Curbelo for US Senate In 2018?

After Senator Marco Rubio won re-election to the US Senate this past election cycle, everyone with any involvement in Florida politics immediately pivoted to the 2018 US Senate race between Senator Bill Nelson (D) and Florida Governor Rick Scott.

Nelson said he is ready to rumble with Scott or anyone the GOP puts up, while Scott has not even hinted at a possible run against Nelson.

Well, Scott has bashed Nelson a couple of times, so I guess you could call those political assaults as hints to running for the Senate.

But while Scott could throw in a bunch of his own money to run against Nelson, would Florida’s governor have the Republican Senate nomination all sown up?

Even with his job creation prowess, could Scott be too conservative in a run against a very liberal member of the US Senate?

Perhaps Republicans, Independents, and some soft Democrats would rather support a more “moderate” Republican like Rep. Carlos Curbelo?

Curbelo recently won re-election by double digits over Democratic challenger Joe Garcia.

Garcia was a terrible candidate for Democrats this cycle but what about next cycle?

Curbelo’s seat is one of those constant toss-up seats in the US House, and it’s only a matter of time before Democrats field a moderate candidate that will check off all the boxes and give Curbelo a legitimate run for his political pesos.

Curbelo would be an interesting Senate candidate for Republicans  considering that his voting record has received praise from both sides of the political aisle.

While he believes that the sky is falling (he believes in global warming) and supports a pathway to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants, Curbelo is very hawkish on many conservative positions, including opposition to Obamacare.

Ok, yes, Scott has immense statewide name recognition and has a lot of money to put behind another statewide campaign, but Curbelo speaks Espanol, and could shore up a lot of the Hispanic vote, especially in Miami-Dade County.

Now if Curbelo continues messing around on his kids Hoverboards, and keeps falling and breaking his limbs, then all bets are off.
