Yesterday’s FIU bridge collapse stunned south Floridian’s, and there have been some reported deaths and injuries. The videos are making waves through the internet, and even President Donald Trump has tweeted his support in monitoring the action taken as a result.
Continuing to monitor the heartbreaking bridge collapse at FIU – so tragic. Many brave First Responders rushed in to save lives. Thank you for your courage. Praying this evening for all who are affected.

Now, Florida Congressmen Carlos Curbelo and Mario Diaz-Balart are commenting on the tragedy.
In a statement, Curbelo explained that “There’s a very sad irony here. This project was built to keep students safe and pedestrians safe and it has ended up being the cause of death of drivers underneath.”
Mario Diaz-Balart commented that “There’s going to be a lot of questions that are going to have to be answered. We’re going to find out what the heck happened here. This is beyond tragic.”
As I leave FIU this evening, I cannot properly express my gratitude towards these brave men and women, as well as my deep sorrow for the victims and their families.

Both Congressmen spoke to Elaine Chao, Secretary of Transportation, but it’s unsure if the federal government has any jurisdiction over the bridge even though federal funds were used to construct it. However, they do support congressional hearings or federal investigations to understand how something like that happened.
Curbelo added that “This is a new technology. My understanding is even on major highways like the 836-826 exchange this type of bridge technology is in place and there’s never been any issue with it, so this is just very surprising and we need to figure out what happened.”
