Carlos Curbelo is currently running a reelection bid, and a new poll released by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is showing that Curbelo is winning against his likely Democratic opponent Debbie Mucarsel-Powell.
Hillary Clinton won Curbelo’s district by more than 16 percentage points in the 2016 Presidential election, but the poll shows that Congressman Curbelo is ahead of Mucarsel-Powell by seven percentage points among 500 likely voters. Considering that Curbelo has not been running any television ads, this news disrupts the “blue wave” that Democrats seek to obtain in this mid-term election.
The poll explains that “In the initial vote, despite major name ID disparity, Mucarsel-Powell earns 41 percent to Congressman Curbelo’s 48 percent. This lead quickly erodes after equal biographic information from both sides. This exodus from Curbelo is spurred by the introduction of Mucarsel-Powell, who at the time of the poll was largely unknown and had not yet communicated with voters in the 26th district.”
In response to the poll, Joanna Rodriguez, Curbelo’s spokeswoman, commented that “Carlos looks forward to running an aggressive campaign about the policies most important to South Floridians like immigration, tax reform, affordable housing, infrastructure and the environment, and he is eager to make the case for his bipartisan, sober legislative strategy to the people of Florida’s 26th congressional district.”
