Carlos Curbelo, who’s ahead in polling in his reelection run, has announced that he’s cosponsoring a proposal that seeks to reform the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) for members of the Armed Forces that want to move into the civilian workforce.

The proposal, “The IMPROVE Transition for Servicemembers Act” improves TAP’s measure of helping servicemembers move into the civilian workforce by allowing a two-day workshop on higher education, skills training and entrepreneurship that are offered by different branches of the federal government.

The bill makes the workshops mandatory, makes sure that there is a full time TAP employee for every 250 transitioning servicemembers, makes sure that the federal government works closer with state veteran services on the matter and tracks the progress of participants along with getting their feedback.

In response to the cosponsorship, Curbelo detailed that “We are thankful every day to our brave servicemembers who have dedicated their lives to protect our nation. As they begin to transition away from their military careers, we must ensure they have the necessary resources for productive and prosperous civilian careers. I am proud to join my colleagues in supporting this bipartisan, bicameral legislation.”

The bill was sent to the Veterans Affairs Committees and U.S. House Armed Services last week.
