South Florida Republicans in Congress are calling for the Trump administration to investigate the death of a Venezuelan opposition leader whose death is questionable. Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario Diaz-Balart and Carlos Curbelo are also calling for sanctions against anyone responsible for the death.
Representative Curbelo’s office noted that “The Miami Herald reported that Caracas councilman Fernando Albán died while in custody of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service infuriating opposition leaders and Venezuelans living abroad. Many believe that he was tortured and that President Nicolás Maduro’s secret police threw his body out of a 10th-floor window to stage a suicide.”
Writing in-depth to President Trump about the death of Fernando Alban, the Congressional members explained that “According to reports, the Venezuelan chief prosecutor classified the disturbing incident as a suicide, indicating that while Alban was waiting to be transferred to a court house, he jumped to his death from the 10th floor of the police headquarters in Caracas. We encourage the State Department to call for an independent investigation of the incident. As information is received regarding the parties responsible and the events that led up to Mr. Alban’s death, we ask to obtain the details of his detention and death as well as the steps the administration plans to take to hold the regime accountable.”
The three Congressional Republicans also held a media event in Kendall that discussed Alban’s death, and they shared their thoughts on the matter.
Alban’s death comes after being accused of trying to assassinate Nicolas Maduro, and Government officials insist that Alban committed suicide, but many who oppose the Venezuelan Government argue that Alban was murdered. In addition, Republican leadership in South Florida has blasted the Venezuelan Government and has called out the country for its oppressive tactics used on its people.
Currently, the United Nations is investigating the event.
